On Saturday March 30 and 31, ImproWerkt! and What comes next! b.v organize a Workshop Masks with Steve Jarand from Calgary, Canada. The workshop days will start at 10:00 am and end at 05:00 pm with a lunch break from 01:00 - 02:00 pm.
Steve’s mask work is based on the Trance Mask method that Keith Johnstone describes in his book Impro. With the use of mirrors the masks are 'activated' and the player is stimulated to follow impulses the masks give and the spontaneous reactions that arise - staying in the moment. Masks can touch, amaze, inspire and unexpectedly come up with hilarious scenes!
With masks you experience a side of improvisation and spontaneity that can be wonderful and surprising. New possibilities present themselves to discover and explore. Beautiful and pure characters can develop from scratch - often to the amazement of the player her/himself. Masks are groundbreaking to do, beautiful to see and an excellent way to experience real transformation. If you want to give your improvisational skills a boost and a discover a new path to tread, working with masks is highly recommended.
“Theatre should have risk, and the most wonderful risk of all is when an actor is surprising himself and living in the present moment, like a child on the playground.”
Steve Jarand is an authority on mask work at the Loose Moose Theater in Calgary, Canada. He has been associated with Loose Moose since 1987 and has been trained by improvisational authority Keith Johnstone, with whom he still works.
